The Council for Leather Exports of India Set to Showcase Thriving Leather Industry at Global Sourcing Expo in Sydney

The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) of India is gearing up for its participation in the Global Sourcing Expo in Sydney, Australia, from 11 – 13 July 2023.

Renowned for its longstanding presence at the Melbourne Global Sourcing Expo’s co-located Footwear and Accessories Show, the Council for Leather Export’s significant participation in Sydney signifies a milestone for the organisation and the Indian leather industry as a whole.

With over 18 top-class leather and leather products companies, the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) aims to showcase the vibrant and thriving leather industry in India to an international audience at the prestigious event, held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.

Established in 1984, the CLE functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and is committed to fostering the overall development of the Indian leather sector. The Council works closely with its members to achieve higher export growth, to enhance India’s share in the global leather trade.

As the notified Export Promotion organisation for the entire leather and leather products industry, the CLE plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the government and the industry, advocating for important policy measures while focusing on the sector’s health and growth.

“With its rich heritage, abundance of raw materials, skilled workforce, and dedication to sustainability, the Indian leather industry has much to offer local trade buyers and we are thrilled to have the Council for Leather Exports onboard for our first-ever Global Sourcing Expo Sydney show,” comments Marie Kinsella, CEO, International Exhibition & Conference Group and organiser of the Global Sourcing Expo.

Snapshot of the Indian leather industry

The Indian leather, leather products, and footwear industry holds a prominent place in the country’s economy, consistently generating high export earnings – amounting to an impressive US $4.87 billion during the 2021-22 financial year.

These figures highlight the industry’s immense potential and its significant contribution to India’s economic growth and its ranking as the second largest exporter of leather goods in the world.

One of the key strengths of the sector lies in its abundant availability of raw materials. India boasts a staggering 20% of the world’s cattle and buffalo population, along with 11% of the world’s goat and sheep population. This ample supply of raw materials, coupled with skilled manpower and innovative technology, has enabled the local leather industry to thrive.

Addressing the global push to incorporate a more ethical and environmentally conscious production process, the CLE’s members have been actively adopting international environmental standards, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability. The industry is also a major employer, providing jobs to an estimated 4.42 million people. A significant portion of these leather workers hail from vulnerable sections of India’s society, with women accounting for roughly 40% of the total workforce.

Unlocking opportunities through constant evolution

However, the strengths of the Indian leather sector extend beyond raw materials and skilled manpower. It boasts a modernised manufacturing base, competitive wage levels, and robust institutional support for design, product development, human resource development, and research and development.

Additionally, India’s strategic location within the Asian landmass provides easy access to developing markets for both import and export purposes.

The CLE notes that the sector has experienced consistent growth, leading to emerging opportunities and development. Initiatives aimed at design development, continuous modernisation, and technological advancement have played a significant role in its evolution. The industry has embraced the integration of high-quality components, resulting in reduced prototype development time and improved delivery compliance. Giving leather manufacturers a further boost, the expanding domestic market for footwear and leather articles has created new avenues for further expansion.

“As the Indian leather industry expands its horizons, the Global Sourcing Expo in Sydney will serve as an ideal platform for forging new partnerships, attracting investments, and solidifying India’s position as a global top contender in the leather and leather products market,” Marie concludes.

The Global Sourcing Expo will take place in Sydney for the first time, at the International Convention Centre from 11-13 July, and again in Melbourne from 21-23 November.
